The Interregnum

Crumbling empires and rising warlords define an age where the only law left is steel.

The Interregnum marks the shadowed twilight between the fall of the Reman Dynasty and the iron fist of Tiber Septim's Third Empire. For nearly five centuries, Tamriel fractured into a patchwork of squabbling kingdoms, stripped of central authority and left to bleed out in civil wars while the Imperial Legion dissolved into private armies.

This was not merely a political vacuum; it was an age where survival eclipsed governance. The once-unified Cyrodiil burned with the fires of the War of the Red Diamond, as claimants tore at the Ruby Throne itself. It is the dark canvas upon which the resilience of Tamrielic civilization was forged, setting the stage for a unification that would cost blood enough to fill the Iliac Bay.

Lore & Background

Following the assassination of Emperor Reman III in 1E 2920, the Second Empire collapsed under the weight of its own ambition. Cyrodiil plunged into a century-long succession crisis known as the War of the Red Diamond, where no single heir could claim the Ruby Throne without sparking bloodshed. The Imperial Legion fractured along provincial lines, creating a power vacuum that allowed local kings and mercenaries to seize control.

While internal strife raged, the continent faced lingering external fears. Though the great Tsaesci invasions of the First Era had been repelled, the shadow of Akavir remained; without the Second Empire's coordinated defense, Tamriel was vulnerable to renewed raids from the east. Simultaneously, outside Cyrodiil, powers like the Camoran Dynasty in Valenwood and the Aldmeri Dominion in Summerset consolidated their own strength, indifferent to the mainland's collapse.

Ultimately, this era of decentralization was a crucible. Warlords rose to fill the void left by the fallen dynasty, their conflicts churning until Tiber Septim finally united the provinces under a new banner, ending five centuries of chaos.

In Their Own Story

The wind howled through the broken arches of Sancre Tor, carrying the scent of ash and old blood. A lone soldier, his armor patched with mismatched plates from a dozen different houses, stared out over the valley where smoke still curled into the grey sky. There was no Emperor to command him now, only the memory of Reman and distant whispers of dragon-men coming from across the sea. He tightened his grip on his sword, knowing that in this age of broken crowns, the only law left was the steel he held.

Reader's Guide

The Interregnum begins with the assassination of Emperor Reman III, shattering the unity of the Second Empire and plunging Cyrodiil into a century-long civil war. Without a strong central figure, warring factions fractured the province, each claiming the Ruby Throne while Imperial defenses crumbled. This internal chaos left the continent vulnerable as Akaviri raiders tested the weakened borders, cementing an era where survival often took precedence over governance or culture.
